Term 3 wks 5-6

 Week 5-6 Term 3 2024

Kaya,

We hope you had a lovely Catholic Day off and got to enjoy it. This week, we're looking forward to celebrating and learning more about Mary as our Patroness in the lead-up to the Feast of the Assumption. It's also the inspiration behind our Mission Market, where the kids have a blast playing games, laughing, and celebrating together.

Learning intensions

Writing

We'll continue with procedural texts this week, focusing on the sequencing of instructions and enhancing our writing by applying adjectives.

Spelling

Over the next fortnight, we'll be focusing on writing and recognising the sounds of *y* (as in "puppy"), *ey* (as in "key"), *oy* (as in "boy"), and *oi* (as in "coin"). We'll work on matching the sound to the symbol.

** Your child’s spelling words are on the back of their fluency grid.

Mathematics

This week develops student knowledge, understanding and skills of position and chance. Students are provided opportunities to:

  • give, describe, and compare the position of objects using positional language
  • give and follow directions to locations and from one location to another
  • describe and identify the position of numbers using structured materials and formations
  • recognise and describe the element of chance in events and games.

Mission Market

Students are allowed to bring no more than $20 IN COINS, which we have encouraged them (through the newsletter, to earn through jobs at home, or to use their pocket money. They should bring the coins in a clearly labelled snap lock bag (or labelled purse/wallet) as it is inevitable that someone loses their money on the day and this way it can be easily returned. It would be good idea to also bring a small shopping bag to take home any goodies in.

This is a day to build appreciation and understanding Mary as our Patroness; to understand and celebration of the Feast of the Assumption; to raise awareness of those less fortunate in the world, and to “give” as an antidote to need. Please note that the Feast of the Assumption actually falls on Thursday, but we will celebrate it on Friday

THANK YOU to DJ MANDY for generously donating her silent disco to the students at OLC again this year!

Year 1 Family Mass

On Sunday, the 25th of August, our Year 1 cohort will be coming together for a special Family Mass. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to connect as a community and strengthen our ties with the parish. The Mass will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 9:30 a.m.

After the Mass, everyone is invited to stay for morning tea, where we can continue to share each other's company. There will also be an area designated for the children to play, providing a chance for them to enjoy some fun and connection. This event is a lovely way for our school community to come together outside the classroom, and we look forward to seeing all Year 1 families there.

Keeping Safe

This term, the children will be learning some concepts relating to Protective Behaviours through the program Keeping Safe during Friday Health classes. The children will be taking part in the Keeping Safe lesson about personal space and body parts. We will be reading stories and emphasising the fact that all parts of their body are private. I understand that the children may laugh and giggle when we talk about the anatomical names, but this is important for every child to know.

URSTRONG

Thing to remember

Tuesday – library (bring bag)

We are proud to be a URSTRONG School, committed to empowering your children with friendship skills through the Friendology 101 curriculum. You're invited to access a FREE Parent Membership, offering hundreds of resources, including an 8-session video series. This will help you learn the same friendship language and strategies taught in the classroom, so you can reinforce messages of empowerment, self-compassion, and kindness at home.

As a next step, we would recommend:

  • Explore the hundreds of resources available to you!

We believe that empowering our students with these skills will create a culture of kindness at our school and we hope that, together, we can support your children to have healthy, feel-good friendships.

Tuesday – return PLD packs

Thursday – sports uniform

Friday- sports uniform (faction shirt)

Canteen – Monday, Thursday and Friday

Playground

It is a school policy that students are not to play on the nature playground before and after school. We have talked to the students, and we would greatly appreciate your help in reinforcing this policy.
