Term 2: weeks 3 & 4

Kaya Families,

Wow, it's incredible how swiftly the first two weeks have flown by! The students have seamlessly transitioned back into the rhythm of Term 2. Witnessing the remarkable growth in their independence since the beginning of Term 1 is truly inspiring. As we foster stronger connections and learn from one another, I'm genuinely grateful to have 21 beautifully unique children in my class. I eagerly anticipate nurturing and deepening these relationships further.

Learning intentions

English

Spelling: Over the next two weeks, we'll delve into phonics, focusing on sounds ‘y’ making ‘i’ as in cry and ‘igh’ making ‘i’ as in light.

Writing: we will revisit the structure of a recount.

Maths

This two-week unit develops student knowledge, understanding, and skills in the attributes and features of two-dimensional shapes. Students are provided opportunities to:

  • explore how shapes can be made by joining (combining) and breaking apart (partitioning) existing shapes

  • classify shapes based on their attributes as that shape (features of triangles, circles, squares, rectangles, quadrilaterals, hexagons, octagons, polygons)

  • manipulate shapes and objects to halve them in different ways. Sometimes, halves are made up of more than one part.

  • create new shapes by adding or removing sides and vertices (corners)

  • explore how two-dimensional (2D) shapes can be classified into different categories according to their features.

  • create linear patterns with shapes that transform (slide and reflections)

  • make designs which have a line of symmetry.

School drop-off begins at 8:30 a.m., providing students with a 10-minute window to unload and engage in social interactions with their peers. This period is crucial as it fosters independence in setting up for the day and facilitates peer interaction. At 8:40 a.m., the bell signals the start of classes. We kindly request parents to aim for their child's arrival at 8:30 a.m. to ensure a smooth transition and maximize the benefits of this pre-class time. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

News Telling

This term starting week 2, we're excited to introduce our class pets, Gumnut the Koala and Sparkle the Unicorn! Each week, students will have the opportunity to take Gumnut or Sparkle home on Fridays and return them to school on Mondays along with their diary. In the diary, they can jot down all the incredible adventures they share with Gumnut or Sparkle. Students are also encouraged to illustrate their experiences with drawings or include photographs. Then, on the subsequent Monday, they will deliver a brief oral presentation, sharing the highlights of their weekend with Gumnut or Sparkle. If you don’t have access to a printer, please email photographs to me and we can add them to the diary
